FRIEND, MENTOR, ROCK N' ROLLER

OUR FRIEND ZACK

ZACKERY LEWIS CANTER: APRIL 17, 1977 - SEPTEMBER 8, 1998.

I sit here in front of the computer and I try to think of what I could possibly say about zack. Since today is Easter Sunday I could say that I remember he loved white chocolate rabbits or that 2 days from now would have been his 24th birthday. I remember so much about Zack that I don't think I could ever write it all down on this page. Zack played an important role for me and many other kids growing up. While he was only a few years older than most of us who looked up to him, he was a lot wiser than his age. Zack had lived a fairly rough life and had to put up with things that most kids his age didn't have to deal with. He never complained much about anything that happened to him, he would kind of just shrug it off and deal with other matters at hand. I think that Zack , like most kids, found release from his problems through his art and through his music. Though Zack never "played" an instrument, that didn't stop him in his persute of rock n' roll expression. Influenced by bands such as The Butthole Surfers, Dead Kennadys, Naked City, The Cows, and other bands of that ilk, Zack always sought a different level of expression in rock and roll. To him instruments were extensions of the soul, not something to be mastered in formulaic progressions or scales. He would often make instruments of his own design usings whatever spare guitar or bass bodys that were laying around. Correct instrument strings didn't matter, what mattered was the sound. He would more often sing and write songs rather than play though. He would often tell me that ",My voice is my instrument" and like his experiments with guitars and basses he would often experiment with his voice. I remember that he used to sing throught a beat up Radio Shack microphone out of an effects peddel. The range of sounds that he would invent were massive, from the most sublime ecco to the harshest frequency of distortion. He taught a lot of us about a different perspective to music that is lost on most people. Not so much that noise is the ultimate form of expression, but rather the feeling and spirit that go into that form of expression. While most people are happy enough to form bands and play covers and original material that is derived from the norm, Zack was always pushing things to a new level with his bands. With that said I hope update this page with works that showcase Zacks unique talent. While most of you might not find what you hear particularly easy to listen to I hope that you enjoy some of these selections as much as we did when we first saw them performed.
